How it started
Meeting a community need
The Food For Thought Lunch Program was developed after learning about the daily lack of food intake at the Linda Community School, which serves over 600 orphaned and vulnerable students. During the later months of 2020, we learned from the school staff that the teachers were noticing a decrease in attendance, a lack of attention and concentration, physical weakness, and tiredness amongst the students.
After the passing of one Grade 6 student from the school, Okodwela Zambia began fundraising to begin a lunch program by feeding the students porridge once a day, 4 times per week.
What we do
Enhance nutritional value
The Food For Though Lunch Program serves 4 meals per week to 600 students at the Linda Community School in Livingstone, Zambia. We also created employment opportunities by employing 3 local women from the community as chefs to cook each meal. The women start their day at 6:30am by collecting water and starting the fire for the pots. They then cook and serve porridge to Grades 1-9 until the end of each school day.
